The controversy that erupted around my appointment by Gov. Tim Kaine to the Virginia Commission on Immigration highlights the very issues we need to address in America. I still believe that I am highly qualified to serve on the commission. I am an immigrant, as well as an accomplished surgeon, a community leader, a person of faith, a passionate activist and a good representative of America’s growing community of Muslims. I am disappointed that I was unable to defeat propaganda and partisan politics.Partisanship has already paralyzed Congress and failed to allow the passage of a comprehensive immigration reform bill last year. In Virginia, the Republicans of the General Assembly had been looking for an opportunity to undermine the work of the governor on this important 20-member panel. (The group is examining the issue of illegal immigration and its effect on the commonwealth.)
From its very first session, Democrats and Republicans had widely divergent views as to whom to elect chairman. It was a right-wing Republican who sent a letter to the governor demanding my resignation and using allegations to undermine my aptitude to serve on the commission. I agreed to resign swiftly so as to not allow partisan politics and a drummed-up controversy to derail the commission or to undermine the good work of the governor to bring some sanity to a General Assembly bent on creating a police state in Virginia for immigrants.
Politics aside, another important issue arose during this controversy. I was attacked for comments I made regarding Israeli military force against Palestinian civilians in Lebanon and the occupied territories and the Lebanon war, a conflict that has been condemned worldwide. Yet we still fail in America, the land of the First Amendment and the melting pot of plurality, to accept differing political views. And we are still willing to stifle dissent while we claim that we want to achieve tolerance and inclusion. Our inability to appreciate the inherent goodness of people and the very powerful tool of dialogue and exchange of ideas will limit our capacity to achieve unity. We should be embracing differences. After all, this rich diversity is the framework of our Constitution.
America remains a celebration of the greatest experiment of mankind and humanity, a nation founded by immigrants, attracting the brightest and hardest-working from all over the world. Celebrating their differences and diversity in a way that does not undo their humanity will keep this country as great as ever. As for me, I will continue to embody what is great about America: an immigrant who is striving to attain the American dream while rising above the challenges of integration and intolerance. Because, after all, that is what keeps me and millions of immigrants going: our belief and trust in the inherent goodness of America and its citizens.

The recent horrific events in Mumbai, India remind us once again of the ugly hideous face of terrorism. Extremism and violence under the guise of religion are the worst manifestations of this evil. Our hearts and most heart-felt condolences go to the people of Mumbai and the affected families all over the world. Our unequivocal condemnation of this terror and our extreme revulsion of acting in the name of religion are most obvious. Linking this horrific event to Islam and Muslims has been another painful aspect of this tragedy. Muslims all over the world and adherents of the great faith of Islam are all steadfast and unequivocal in separating this crime from the tenets and traditions of their faith. The linkage of this crime to a terrorist group from Pakistan bent on violent confrontation with Indian forces in Kashmir and indiscriminately targeting innocent civilians makes this a crime of unfathomable proportions, but it should not be linked to Islamic teachings as a pretext to why it was committed. It was simply a repulsive crime committed by violent terrorists. The linkage to any religion brings no further degree of severity to it. The attack on the Jewish place of worship is particularly tragic and goes against every thread of Islamic teaching of revering and respecting people of other faiths and traditions. People who committed this terror represent nothing related to the religion of Islam and their actions in no capacity can be linked to the world of Islam and Muslims.

Memorial day is a day where all of us as Americans remember those who have sacrificed their lives while in military service for our country. We come to remember those who have paid with the ultimate price, so that all of us living can enjoy the freedom, liberty and prosperity of America. We should all pay our respect to our lost ones and remember them and their families in our prayers and thoughts. As Muslim Americans, we know that there are many Muslim Americans who proudly are remembered as part of this solemn day of remembrance. As we cherish their memories, we are committed and resolved to continue to exert our utmost to contribute to the well being and prosperity of our country.

Guarding Against Robbery and Assault

Robbery and assault are serious crimes. While money is often the motivation, these incidents are considered crimes of violence because they involve the threat or actual use of physical violence. The basic rules of prevention are to be sensible and to be alert. The following tips will also help reduce the risk of robbery or assault.

If possible, don’t walk alone during late-night hours. Walk in groups whenever you can—there is always safety in numbers.

Let a family member or friend know your destination and your estimated time of arrival or return. That way, the police can be notified as quickly as possible if there is a problem.

Stay in well-lit areas as much as possible. Avoid alleys, vacant lots, wooded areas, and other short-cuts or secluded areas. They are usually not well-lit or heavily traveled.

Walk on the sidewalk whenever possible. Walk close to the curb, avoiding doorways, bushes, and other potential hiding places.

If you have to walk in the street, walk facing traffic. A person walking with traffic can be followed, forced into a car, and abducted more easily than a person walking against traffic.

Walk confidently, directly, and at a steady pace. Don’t stop to talk to strangers.

Wear clothing and shoes that give you freedom of movement. And don’t burden yourself with too many packages or items.

Always be aware of your surroundings. If you are wearing headphones, don’t turn up the volume so high that you cannot hear outside noises.

Never hitchhike or accept rides from strangers.

Report any suspicious activity or person immediately to the Metropolitan Police Department at 3-1-1. Or, if it is an emergency, dial 9-1-1.

Avoid carrying large sums of cash, or displaying expensive jewelry in public.

Basic Street Smarts

Wherever you are—on the street, in an office building or shopping mall, driving, waiting for a bus or subway—stay alert and tuned in to your surroundings.

Send the message that you’re calm, confident, and know where you’re going.

Trust your instincts. If something or someone makes you uneasy, avoid the person or leave.

Know the neighborhoods where you live and work.

Check out the locations of police and fire stations, public telephones, hospitals, and restaurants, or stores that are open late.

Don’t resist. Give up your property—don’t give up your life.

Report the crime to the police. Try to describe the attacker accurately. Your actions can help prevent others from becoming victims.

Self defense measures are most effective when applied as preventive steps—avoiding the crime in the first place.

These measures include running away, hiding, screaming, and raising an alarm—remember, more people will respond to someone yelling “Fire” than they will to “Help!””

Safety in Your VehicleThe crime of “carjacking” – which is stealing a car by force – captures headlines across the country. Statistically speaking, however, your chances of being a victim of carjacking are very slim, and taking preventive measures can reduce that risk even more.

If the carjacker threatens you with a gun or other weapon, give up your car. Don’t argue. Your life is definitely worth more than a car.

Get away from the area as quickly as possible.

Try to remember what the carjacker looked like—sex, race, age, hair and eye color, special features, clothes.

Report the crime immediately to the police.

Be aware of your surroundings. Look around before conducting a transaction. If you see anyone or anything suspicious, cancel your transaction and go to another ATM.

If you must use an ATM after hours, make sure it’s well-lit.

Never walk away from an ATM with cash still in hand. If you are going to count your money, do so at the ATM.

When making an ATM transaction from your car, be aware of your surroundings. Keep your eyes and ears open, and keep car doors locked.

Preventing AssaultsAssaults are basically fights carried out with or without a weapon at home or in a public space, between strangers, (frequently) among friends, acquaintances, or loved ones.

The most serious assaults are known as “aggravated assaults,” “assaults with a deadly weapon,” or “assaults with intent to kill.”

Less serious offenses are called “simple assaults.” In many cases, simple assaults turn into more serious assaults or even homicides, if the initial argument or fight is not scaled back or resolved quickly.

While some assaults are unavoidable, use the following tips to make sure simple arguments do not turn violent or deadly:

If you are involved in a heated argument that appears to be turning violent, walk away. If you stay and fight “to prove something,” you will only demonstrate poor judgment in almost every instance.

Never carry a firearm, knife, or other illegal weapon. A weapon will definitely escalate the situation, and it could ultimately be used to harm innocent people or yourself.

Avoid excessive drinking, or if you have been drinking, recognize its impact on your judgment. Alcohol is a contributing factor in many assaults.

If you see an assault in progress, dial 9-1-1 immediately to alert the police. Do not jump into the fray, unless it is a last resort to prevent more serious injury.

The worldwide economy is getting increasingly worse and the poor are being hit the hardest

Steve Tarpin can bake a graham cracker crust in his sleep, but explaining why the price for his Key lime pies went from $20 to $25 required mastering a thornier topic: global economics.

He recently wrote a letter to his customers and posted it near the cash register listing the factors — dairy prices driven higher by conglomerates buying up milk supplies, heat waves in Europe and California, demand from emerging markets and the weak dollar.

The owner of Steve’s Authentic Key Lime Pies in Brooklyn said he didn’t want customers thinking he was “jacking up prices because I have a unique product.”

“I have to justify it,” he said.

The U.S. is wrestling with the worst food inflation in 17 years, and analysts expect new data due on Wednesday to show it’s getting worse. That’s putting the squeeze on poor families and forcing bakeries, bagel shops and delis to explain price increases to their customers.

U.S. food prices rose 4 percent in 2007, compared with an average 2.5 percent annual rise for the last 15 years, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. And the agency says 2008 could be worse, with a rise of as much as 4.5 percent.

Higher prices for food and energy are again expected to play a leading role in pushing the government’s consumer price index higher for March.

Analysts are forecasting that Wednesday’s Department of Labor report will show the Consumer Price Index rose at a 4 percent annual rate in the first three months of the year, up from last year’s overall rise of 2.8 percent.

For the U.S. poor, any increase in food costs sets up an either-or equation: Give something up to pay for food.

“I was talking to people who make $9 an hour, talking about how they might save $5 a week,” said Kathleen DiChiara, president and CEO of the Community FoodBank of New Jersey. “They really felt they couldn’t. That was before. Now, they have to.”

For some, that means adding an extra cup of water to their soup, watering down their milk, or giving their children soda because it’s cheaper than milk, DiChiara said.

U.S. households still spend a smaller chunk of their expenses for foods than in any other country — 7.2 percent in 2006, according to the USDA. By contrast, the figure was 22 percent in Poland and more than 40 percent in Egypt and Vietnam.

In Bangladesh, economists estimate 30 million of the country’s 150 million people could be going hungry. Haiti’s prime minister was ousted over the weekend following food riots there.

Still, the higher U.S. prices seem eye-popping after years of low inflation. Eggs cost 25 percent more in February than they did a year ago, according to the USDA. Milk and other dairy products jumped 13 percent, chicken and other poultry nearly 7 percent.

USDA economist Ephraim Leibtag explained the jumps in a recent presentation to the Food Marketing Institute, starting with the factors everyone knows about: sharply higher commodity costs for wheat, corn, soybeans and milk, plus higher energy and transportation costs.

The other reasons are more complex. Rapid economic growth in China and India has increased demand for meat there, and exports of U.S. products, such as corn, have set records as the weak dollar has made them cheaper. That’s lowered the supply of corn available for sale in the U.S., raising prices here. Ethanol production has also diverted corn from dinner tables and into fuel tanks.

Soybean prices have gone up as farmers switched more of their acreage to corn. Drought in Australia has even affected the price of bread, as it led to tighter global wheat supplies.

The jump has left people in the food business to do their own explaining. Twin Cafe Caterers in lower Manhattan posted a letter on its deli cooler: “Due to the huge increase of the gas, the electricity, the water and all the other utilities, we had to raise the prices a little bit.” It went on to say that all its food prices have risen, too.

Wonder Bagels, in Jersey City, N.J., posted a letter from its wheat supplier, A. Oliveri & Sons, saying the recent situation was unprecedented.

“The major mills across the country are using words like ‘rationing’ and ‘shortages’ if things continue,” it said. “We will sweat out the summer together, hoping there will be some flour left to purchase at any price.”

The letter called for an immediate halt to exports and a change in farm policy, “stop paying farmers NOT to grow crops.” A new farm bill, stalled in Congress, would expand farm subsidies if it passes, however.

For some Americans, the resulting increases might be barely perceptible. The Cheesecake Factory raised prices by 1.5 percent at the end of February, Applebee’s by 3 percent.

But for the poorest U.S. families, the higher costs may mean going hungry. A family of four is eligible for a maximum $542 a month in food stamps, which never lasted the whole month before, Food Bank of New Jersey’s DiChiara said.

“Now food stamps go fewer and fewer days of the month,” she said.

The Food Bank recently got a letter of its own from a key vendor. Its grim message: Sorry, but the prices they charge the Food Bank would be increasing 20 percent, due to food inflation.

The AP reports that the person alleged to have plotted the murderous London bombings is dead and plotting again to kill has died. Story below the fold…

Abu Obeida al-Masri, an Egyptian al-Qaida chief responsible for attacks on U.S. forces in Afghanistan and linked to international terrorist plots, is dead, a U.S. counterterrorism official said Wednesday.

Al-Masri died of either hepatitis or a blood disease, in late 2007 in Pakistan‘s lawless tribal area bordering Afghanistan, a second counterterrorism official said. They spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter.

The official said al-Masri was “a senior external operations planner” for al-Qaida. He said he has been linked to the 2006 plot to blow up multiple airliners with liquid explosives traveling between the United Kingdom and the United States and Canada. He has also been linked to the July 7, 2005 bombings in London.

In Pakistan, army spokesman Maj. Gen. Athar Abbas said he had no information about the death of al-Masri. Several Pakistani intelligence officials contacted by The Associated Press had no immediate comment.

Based in the mountainous Afghan province of Kunar, al-Masri was believed to have been in charge of planning attacks on U.S.-led coalition forces in the volatile east region of the country. Violence in southern and eastern Afghanistan spiked last year, leaving about 1,600 people dead, including a surge in suicide attacks — a change of tactics by the militants.
